Minoan Peak Sanctuary and Church of St. George

The Mountain of Saint George was a place of worship in ancient times. Excavations from 1992 to 1994 revealed the "Minoan Peak Sanctuary", a finding of particular importance for the study of the Minoan religion, since the temple is the only monument of its kind that has not been looted. Numerous stone worshiping objects, clay figurines, bronze human statuettes and offerings, jewelry and ceramics have been found in this place.

During the Byzantine period, the church of St. George was built and it has been restored and preserved till nowadays. On the floor of the temple you can see the preserved mosaic (7th century AD) with various motifs such as hunting scenes and Hellenistic meanders.

On St. George’s day, the locals organize a traditional celebration in the courtyard of the temple. The view from the church is breathtaking: At an altitude of 350 meters, you can see the southwest coast of the Peloponnese and a large part of the Aegean Sea. If the weather is good and the horizon is clear, you can even see Antikythera on the South, as well as the mountains of Crete.
