St. Sophia Cave

The cave is located in a steep area of exceptional beauty, on the west side of Kythera, about 60 meters above sea level. According to tradition, the place was a sanctuary of the nymphs and subsequent worship area in Christian times. The exploration and detailed mapping of the cave was done by speleologist Anna Petrochilou in 1955. The excellent paintings in the antechamber of the cave date back to the 13th century. Among the figures  depicted, you will see Saint Sophia and her three daughters (Agapi, Pisti and Elpida).

The cave is open to visitors from the end of June until the end of September.
